Fun fun stuff from when I was A LOT younger... Sgt. Slaughter (who I hit in the nuts with a well placed cup throw in the Greensboro Coliseum when I didn't know any better) and Don Kernodle (who's put me nightie night in the ring with a sleeper hold. ) vs. Mike Davis and Ricky Rood (Ruud?) aka Rick Rude as a XXXTREME MACHINE-ESQUE JOBBER! David Crockett and JOHNNY WEAVER (who's also sent me to dreamland with the infamous Weaver Lock sleeper.) on commentary... Ah yes, "The Top Rope Slaughter Cannon", been a long time ago when dudes won matches with something like that. Road to Greensboro (hey! right down the street!) series... more to come!

I could go on for DAYS about the Slaughter/Kernodle vs. Steamboat/Youngblood feud, loved it as a wee lad, but I'll skip the NUMEROUS encounters and wrap it up with the FINAL CONFLICT. Greensboro Coliseum, March 1983. Steamboat and Youngblood lose, they can't team anymore. Which ironically, set up rematches where if Slaughter and Kernodle lost, they couldn't team in that city they lost in again(Slaughter was getting ready to start his WWF run, great way to make some money in the Mid-Atlantic on his way out. Smart ass booking!) On a side note, Don Kernodle told me when I ask him about this cage match about all the color he got...he told me he took TEN ASPIRINS. He also got "giddy" with the giggy... A quick set-up... Greensboro, the chaos: The fines from Greensboro Massacre: Notice after Kernodle hits the cage and starts gushing, Steamboat starts landing shots, Kernodle whips his head to the left...watch Crocket and Bob Caudle at ringside jump out of their seats and back up because Don's head whip just sprayed them with blood. LOL! The finish! The actual pin is missed due to a glich in the video (said to be on the master copy-which is bullshit since I have the finish at home on DVD) Enjoy! Love the old time ending theme to Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling played at the end as Kernodle and Slaughter leave the ring...

With all the above finally posted, you may be wondering "why did he put all that stupid old shit on here?"
Well kids, if you watched it all... you just witnessed the birth of modern PPV.
The March 1983 cage match between these teams drew 15,000 to the Coliseum, another 15,000 were turned away at the door.
This night, which also had Flair vs. Valentine in a cage match as well I think... led to Starrcade '83. The premise for a "mega card", to be held on the traditional huge drawing Thanksgiving night event, was set on March 12th, 1983 with this overflow fan turnout.
Starrcade's closed circuit telecasts to make those happy who couldn't see it live was PPV in its infancy, broadcast thoughout the Carolinas and Virgina. This lead to WrestleMania and national live feeds of the action. Which led to where we are today.
It all began from this angle and feud.

Very cool. I had always thought WrestleMania 1 was the first closed circuit wrestling event. Thinking about StarrCade makes me miss WCW. I really need to get the StarrCade DVD. Sometimes I wish WCW had defeated WWE in the Monday Night Wars... If only they would have started pushing the younger talent when they still had the chance. I just hope TNA learns a lesson from that... With Russo as the booker... I'm sad again. - Shane
