[Open to a ramshackle street as a mammoth, hulking huge truck drives slowly past the screen. It’s side is made of corrugated iron, and before long the image just becomes a blur of gray lines. Tia and Rudolph Tarr are stood on the street, watching as it moves past them. A flyer is pasted on it’s side; ‘The Armenian Flying Circus.’]
Tia: They’re here, in America?
[She unties her purple woolen scarf a little and pulls her husband close to her.]
Tia: I want to see them Rudolph.
[He kisses her on the cheek.]
Rudolph: I know.
[She smiles at him sweetly before opening his plaid jacket and wrapping herself inside it with him. He sighs as her perfume wafts up from her coal-black hair beneath his chin. As the truck clears their path they walk across together to the other side. The mailman is doing his early morning rounds.]
[Open to the lobby of the hotel where the couple are staying. A man in an official looking cap is stood, with arms crossed over his chest, by the stairs.]
Sid Waters: Good evening Mr. and Mrs. Tarr.
[Tia giggles.]
Rudolph: It’s morning Sid!
Sid: Oh.
[He takes out a cigarette from his front pocket.]
Tia: When did the circus come into town?
[He puts the cigarette in his mouth but doesn’t light it.]
Sid: Apparently, they came in on the evening ferry yesterday… the truck still covered in Armenian snow. Are you going to see a show? I understand you’re both quite patriotic.
Tia: Not especially. But I did used to work for that very same circus, long before they ever left the country to perform.
Sid: I see.
[He lights a match and ignites his cigarette.]
Sid: I might take a look myself. Goodnight… or good morning, rather.
[They laugh.]
Tia & Rudolph: Good morning!
[The couple walk up the stairs, heading for their room.]
