So...this is an interesting little e-mail exchange I found while going through my files. I don't know if anybody else will find it interesting or not, but this is pretty much the last time douja was around. Plus, I was going to just delete it anyway to make some room on my hard drive. Why is it interesting? douja (Adam) has some interesting points about BOB that he sent to J (who then forwarded this to me to offer some thoughts), and there are some things that could have been (SMP + douja together?). This is pre-Living in Sin.
Anyway...check it out for some "what could have been". I've highlighted some interesting things and have added some 2009 perspective on some of this.
*******
ADAM: So, with BOB being the last remaining bit of my childhood I am still holing onto, it is a cause that deserves to be saved. Now, I haven't talked to you or Leary in years, so I don't know if you guys already have some scheme cooked up to change things or what, but I just say all this place needs is activity. That is what was so special about the STWF back in like 1999 or BOB a couple years later. At any time there would be 5 or 6 well developed feuds being played out on the boards. There hasn't been more then 1 at a time at BOB in years.
Leary: Part of this is my fault. Personally, I don't RP much because I tend to focus on putting all my efforts into the BOB shows. Part of the reason I've gone to using the Ted rants was so that BOB could have more important MEGASHOWS per year (aka BOB On-Demand events) and also maybe it'd give me a bit more time for a Rant here and there. Because I can whip up those summaries in a couple of days instead of a whole week, I was planning on running a monthly or bi-monthly BOB-On-Demand event. That way, the big events would have a special feel and I wouldn't use up all my good material on SMCs.
I figured this would be good because it would reduce my burnout, which took me out for pretty much all of 2006, and most of 2004 and 2005. Because I'd basically just be writing 6-12 big shows spaced out instead of 11 shows, a giant PPV show and then doing nothing for the rest of the year, which is what has tended to happen with me. And that could also account for much of the inactivity at times in BOB because who knows when we'll all get burned out?
Leary 2009: Hmm...that didn't quite work out, LOL. I think I was still having some burnout issues in 2006-early 2007. I think since BOB "restarted" with Comeback's A Bitch in 2007, I've probably been on one of the better booking rolls. At least I know J thinks my booking's been the shit. Funny, I was thinking about doing weekly "summary" shows not too long ago again with 12 On-Demands a year. Then I realized that I wouldn't have the time for that right now. I'd be curious what anybody else thought of the Ted rants. I thought they were OK, but they really didn't convey the BOB show feel, which is the whole point of doing this thing.
2004-5, burn out = "too drunk to write" LOL! That and I really didn't know how to run an e-fed. And, to be brutally honest, the sWo really was dragging down my creativity and enjoyment of BOB. BOB has always been about do whatever you want, but the sWo was all about planning and pushing themselves down everyone's throat. It was a huge mistake having them become big players that quick when they hadn't earned anything (NO OFFENSE, MB...you're much better now!).
Also, I feel like (hope) I've improved with not pushing my characters and never booking guys who are active on the RP board. Anyway, I like our new every two weeks thing. It gives me time to relax, then write, then relax again, and hopefully it gives all you guys enough time to RP/write matches/segs and plan stuff with me.
ADAM: I have always felt that the only reason douja has had the lasting power he has is just because it brings enjoyment to me and me only. I enjoy typing in the "douja language". I have long since known that it only makes sense in my head, most people have no idea what I am trying to get across, and probably noone but me understands what he is saying. But, not to sound weird, I can hear the guy talking in my head as I type his promo's. Anyway, I felt the direction of the character has been very misunderstood over the second part of his tenure. You see, "douja" thinks he is better then everybody and the best BOB has ever seen. I know that is not the case. I am well aware that there are a lot more talented and creative people that have been involved with this. As for me, I just use it as an excuse to type a bunch of cuss words and say a bunch of crazy, off the wall shit. It brings a smile to my face.
LEARY: I enjoy douja very much. I think I get the character, though I still haven't totally grasped how to write his dialogue :^)
ADAM: Now, a trend I have noticed is that 95% of the people that have joined BOB in the last 5 years first RP has been about how they have wanted to "take over" BOB. Why? Why can't anyone join this place just to have some damn fun, you know? I think we need to coach the few people who actually do come to the boards and participate that the point of this place is not to run people off, but to have some fun. We, along with a couple others, can do that.
LEARY: I'm honestly not a good coach. I agree with the idea though if that's something you'd like to help out with. I can deputize you. As for the "taking over" stuff, I dunno. I've advertised on a few boards for BOB, but it hasn't gotten us any new good writers. The people I've recruited have all eventually flaked out on me. I've tried. I just don't know enough people who dig the whole "parody efed" thing long-term.
Leary 2009: I've highlighted my favorite sentence there. Fun. He nailed it. As for the RPers, this is still the case. A lot of people will never "get" BOB. But I'll keep trying to advertise it (I've posted in three ewrestling forums that we're looking for handlers...if you have any ideas for recruiting, shout 'em out or try and recruit people who you think might fit in here). And yeah, looking back, everyone was nWo crazy for way too long past expiration.
ADAM: Now, the first thing is this. The OWTTM can't be held by someone who is not active in the boards. That is why after Living In Sin, SMP has got to take the OWTTM. But, the thing that will keep that from happening is the March Mayhem tournament. That thing is fun if, say, things were booming in BOB. But, right now, I think it would just encourage more non-participation. I mean, hell, B.F. Sack could win the thing! So, if you are interested, maybe you could talk to Leary about scraping or even postponing that. I think it would be best for the entire fed if SMP took the OWTTM off of whoever wins at Living In Sin so that we have an active champion. I can't remember the last time there was an active champion of any kind in BOB. Maybe even at the end of the ppv, SMP comes out, cuts a promo on the winner, and takes the belt from whoever wins the tournament. See, I don't know at all what you guys have planned with the STWF angle, but this would all tie into it. SMP would have not only the OWTTM, the STWF IG belt and the BOB Legend Championship he won from douja earlier. He is now clearly the most dominant guy in the company.
LEARY: I plan on giving it to Sir Zeno. He has been active, granted not as active as SMP, but still... I've screwed over his characters a few times, making his characters MY characters personal bitches for most of 2005. I'm going to give him the ball and see if he runs with it or not. March Mayhem will not totally occupy the SMCs. I'll probably use half the SMC for that, mainly for the matches, but keep feuds going on around the tournament. The best seeds will go to active members. I wish I had the schedule all set to explain it to you, but I don't yet since I'm trying to get through Living In Sin first.
Leary 2009: Adam had a good point here, which is part of my new booking philosophy, and sort of started around this time. Activity = push. It took me a while to get the title on SMP, but hey, it finally happened after 10 years. As for Sir Zeno...at this time I was enjoying CircA's stuff. Still, Circ was a bit of a douche, always bitching about losing to/feuding with Studnuts. He got a lot of what he deserved. Some not so much. But he stuck around way longer than anybody should have, even when there were no shows posted in months, he'd still write RPs...
ADAM: Secondly, I have noticed that douja and SMP have almost been admitting a bit of an appreciation for each other in their promo's. They have started to see that the greater good is the new guys who have no respect for the roots of BOB. So, douja says that once and for all after the moving bus match, SMP has earned his respect. In a nutshell, he offers his services to SMP. He offers to become his enforcer. The goal becomes to keep the belts on SMP. Then, we go ahead with this feud with the newer guys on the boards that has been shaping up lately.
LEARY: Could we do a slow build to this instead of just hot-shotting it? We could have SMP and douja team up and aim to get Zeno, but instead, heel commish Dubya says that neither one of them is ready for the main event. So maybe you guys could then work with Axl Van Halen for a little while in a feud, OR, I could gladly put the TAG BELTS on douja and SMP in a reunion of Smooth & Chocolaty (which could lead to a feud with those EFOW guys or a combo of Mr. Paradox/Dr. Thrilla) as Dubya does everything in his power to make sure SMP never gets a shot at the OWTTM. Maybe even forcing them to fight each other in the remainder of the 3-part series, with the winner of the Nick Cage Match getting a shot at Zeno's title. This would be part of Zeno's plan to try and turn SMP and douja back into enemies and make it easier for him to retain the OWTTM.
I think this could be great with the proper build up. I'm trying to think in a more long-term way lately. J once told me how winning a title should be a major accomplishment, and I think that there should be an epic chase to the OWTTM to make it have some credibility (yes, I said credibility about a BOB title...weird). Even though, believe me, I'd love to have douja or SMP as the OWCTM, but the more compelling story is always the chase to the title, rather than the actual having of the title. But when SMP eventually does dethrone Zeno, I'm all for douja being the enforcer or whatever and having a nice long reign, because SMP rules. And of course, I'm sure douja/SMP would eventually end up splitting and feuding again. Of course, if Zeno doesn't do much, I may always reconsider...
Leary 2009: This douja/SMP thing could've been interesting looking back. If I was booking now, this probably would've gotten done. But also, douja vanished not very long after this. I guess he really didn't like March Mayhem that year...And yeah, I still feel like that about the BOB OWTTM unless there's a great little swerve you can do (e.g. Axl dressed as Mano to get the title of the inactive Sir Zeno, which was J's idea).
This is also influence of Kevin Kelly (the former WWF announcer) who I'd been listening to on an Internet radio show. He had a lot of good booking ideas and pointed out a lot of things that I think have helped me with planning things here for long-term payoffs rather than pointless gimmick matches and hotshotted angles. Also, douja and SMP had planned to do some sort of 3-match series, which would end with a Nicolas Cage match (never happened).
The funny bit here? At some point, I had SMP unveil the Medigree in a random match by accident because that was going to be his superultraspecial finisher to finally defeat douja once and for all. Whoopsie. I think I've made a few inside jokes about this on the show, right J?
Also, I tried to get a Zeno/SMP feud going right before CircA vanished in 2007 for a while before his infamous last stand in BOB with Paradox/Thrilla.
ADAM: douja will be pissed off his legacy is being torn apart by the younger guys. He becomes very paranoid about losing all glory he ever had, and wondering if he ever did actually have any glory to begin with. So, he alighns himself with the one guy, despite hating him, gives him even a bit of respect... SMP. He decides that he needs to stop the pot smoking once and for all to re-focus himself on the business he has come to love over these years. But, I was thinking about giving him a new addiction. Mostly, steroids and pain killers after all these years of wrestling. The radio RP I wrote was supposed to be a parody of Kurt Angle's crazy radio antics. I really didn't know if anyone got that or not, but, I would like to turn douja into a bit of a parody of Angle and maybe Hogan mixed in.
LEARY: Yep, I got that. Funny stuff.
ADAM: I would have him start going by his real name, he would be all ripped up, and basically be the Arn Anderson to SMP's Flair. I feel like maybe me and you could stir some shit together and make things really interesting again. Shit, it would be pretty cook if maybe we got some old timers to come back and get involved as well. Maybe Luke warm, maybe Skeeter brings back Hank?
LEARY: Oh, we can bring the characters back. I don't know about the handlers. Skeeter is super-lazy as always. I don't know any of the old-timers, actually, aside from Voss, but he's out of efedding right now and he flaked out last time I tried to bring him back a couple years back. If you guys have contact with any of the old STWF guys like Luke Warm or Bohemoth or anybody else, try and recruit them. Please. I'd love for them to be here.
Leary 2009: We ALMOST got Luke back in 2008. Then work kept him busy and American Panda ate him. Ah, life is so unpredictable. As for Skeeter? I can't even get an e-mail back from him these days since he had that kid. Bastard. And yes, I stand by my super-lazy comment. As for Voss? He has this habit of vanishing. He had The Pope in 2003, then vanished. Returned with Kid Pirate, vanished. Returned with Kid Pirate and American Panda a while later (and also joined about 10 efeds while trying to run BRAND) and...vanished. But hey, the dude has a wife and kids...and he's Australian. And he's a cool dude. I just wish he had more time for BOB.
ADAM: Who knows, but I think we could have some fun with it. Let me know what you are thinking though, man. Maybe I just started drinking to early and got to pondering BOB a little too hard. Who Knows?
LEARY: You've got a lot of good thoughts, it is REALLY nice to know you thought this much about BOB. I hope you don't feel like it was all a waste and that maybe some of my ideas are useful in here. I'm more about the shows, really, then what happens on the RP forum, to be honest. It seems you're the opposite... I'm definitely open to having any more ideas and talking through this whole thing more if you want. And J, as always, I'd love to get your thoughts on this as well. I'm sure we can sort this all out between the three of us.
******
Anyway...if anybody has any thoughts or comments on any of this stuff, shoot. Also, now I've flipped around a lot on the whole RP board thing. You guys write good RPs and I try my best to reward everyone at some point for their hard work. Everyone needs something to strive for.
So, if anyone ever has any concerns about their character's direction or how they're push is going, let me know. I can get blind sometimes to the most obvious things. I'm not perfect. All I ask is that you try not to think is super detail, but more long term.
Are there any feuds you want?
Are there any accomplishments you'd like to have here?
I want to make sure everyone here is always having fun and making BOB the best it can be.
Just let me know. I'm only a PM away.
Cheers,
